New Delhi. Amid efforts to restore peace in Maniupar and bring life back on track, a major agreement was reached between the Central Government and the Cookie Council (KZC) today. Cookie-Joe Council has agreed to open the National Highway-2. The NH-2, connecting Manipur to Nagaland and other parts of the Northeast, had been closed for the past several months since the violence between Maetayi and Cookie communities. Cookie-Joe Council has also assured cooperation with the security forces deployed by the central government in the state. With the opening of NH-2, it will be easy to deliver the necessary items for the citizens living in relief camps in Manipur. With this, people will not have trouble in coming.
The agreement was signed in a meeting between the Union Home Ministry, Cookie National Organization (KNO) and United People’s Front (UPF) in Delhi today. KNO and UPF have promised to remove their seven camps from struggle areas, deposit their weapons in CRPF and BSF camps. This is considered a very big step before PM Modi’s visit to Manipur. Let us tell you that in May 2023, there was a lot of violence between the cookie and the people of the Metai community in Manipur, after which the situation has not been normal.
More than 250 people have lost their lives in violent incidents and many people had to leave their homes and run away after which they have taken shelter in relief camps. State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from the post on 9 February this year. President’s rule was implemented in the state after the CM resigned. On July 25, Union Home Minister Amit Shah proposed to extend the President’s rule in Parliament to extend the next 6 months, which was approved.
