The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that the marked low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal has now taken the form of a depression. On Sunday, the IMD said in a bulletin that this depression is located about 310 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 260 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 290 km south-southeast of Paradip in Odisha and 410 km south of Digha in West Bengal.
This weather system is very likely to move towards north Odisha-West Bengal coasts and intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to cross north Odisha-Ganga region of West Bengal, Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh.
The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange’ warning (be prepared) for heavy to very heavy rains in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput districts of Odisha. Apart from this, a ‘Yellow’ warning of heavy rain has also been issued for Kendpara, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts.
Rainfall is expected in most parts of Odisha on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, under the influence of the depression, strong winds of 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph are expected over northwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and Odisha coast.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast and northwestern Bay of Bengal during this period as strong winds and rough weather are likely from September 8 to 11.
