The Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has passed a condolence resolution in the memory of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The Cabinet paid tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh by observing two minutes silence on Thursday. Seven days of state mourning has been declared on his death till January 1, 2025. The national flag will remain at half mast throughout the country during this mourning period. The national flag will also be flown at half-mast in all Indian Missions/High Commissions abroad for seven days till January 01, 2025. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s last rites will be performed with state honours. On the day of the funeral, a half-day holiday will be declared in all central government offices and central public undertakings.

The Cabinet expresses deep sorrow on the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, on December 26, 2024 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Born on September 26, 1932 in Gah village of West Punjab in the Punjab province of undivided India, Dr. Singh had an illustrious educational life. He obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from Punjab University in 1954 and his Tripos with First Class Honors in Economics from Cambridge University in 1957. He was awarded the D.Phil degree by the University of Oxford in 1962. Dr. Singh started his career as a Senior Lecturer at Panjab University, Chandigarh and became Professor of Economics in the same university. In 1969, he became Professor of International Trade at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. Dr. Manmohan Singh became Economic Advisor in the then Ministry of Foreign Trade in 1971. He was Chief Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Finance (1972–76), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (November 1976 to April 1980), Member Secretary, Planning Commission (April 1980 to September 1982) and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (September 1982 to January 1985). ) are. Dr. Singh was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (1987), India’s second highest civilian honour, apart from numerous awards and honours. He was also awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award of the Indian Science Congress (1995), the Euro Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year (1993), the Adam Smith Award of the University of Cambridge (1956). Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. His role is important in bringing a comprehensive policy of economic reforms. Dr. Singh became the Prime Minister of India on May 22, 2004 and served as Prime Minister in his first term till May 2009. He also served as Prime Minister for a second term from May 2009 to 2014. Dr. Manmohan Singh has left his indelible mark on our national life. In his demise the nation has lost an important statesman, eminent economist and an eminent leader.
