New Delhi. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, has approved to extend the scheme of distribution of free grains to the poor people for the next four years. While giving information in a press conference, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government will now provide free food grains to the poor till 2028.

The Union Cabinet has decided to continue the supply of free fortified rice under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY) and other welfare schemes from July 2024 to December 2028. The main objective of this initiative is to promote development and nutrition. Ashwini Vaishnav said that the entire burden of expenditure on this scheme will be borne by the Central Government, the estimated expenditure of which is approximately Rs 17,082 crore. Prime Minister Modi has approved the continuation of supply of fortified rice in all schemes like Mid Day Meal, Free Ration and PM Poshan Yojana under Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY).

Success of rice fortification initiative
The Union Minister said that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had decided in April 2022 to implement the Rice Fortification Initiative across the country by March 2024. The work of this scheme is being done in a phased manner, in which till now three phases have been successfully completed. He claimed that the supply of free fortified rice would solve the problem of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies.
Road projects also got approval
The Union Cabinet has also approved road projects in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab. Under this scheme, 2,280 km of roads will be constructed, for which a total of Rs 4,406 crore will be spent.
Apart from this, the Union Cabinet has also approved the development of National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat. The project will be completed in two phases, with the aim of showcasing the rich and diverse maritime heritage and creating the world’s largest maritime heritage complex.
