Mahendra Singh Dhoni has applied for a trademark for his famous surname ‘Captain Cool’. This application was filed on 5 June 2025 through the Trade Marx Registry Portal. According to the report of News18, Dhoni wants special rights on this surname. This surname reflects their calm and restrained leadership style.
‘Captain Cool’ is not just a name. This shows the specialty of being calm under Dhoni’s pressure. He won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He is the only captain who won all three big ICC titles. Dhoni now wants to use this surname for sports training, coaching and entertainment services.
Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal said, “This trademark reflects the importance of personality rights.” Initially, the registry objected under Section 11 (1) of the Trade Marx Act. He feared that it could cause confusion. But Dhoni’s team argued that ‘Captain Cool’ has a deep relationship with him for a long time. Fans and media have used it for years. The registry accepted it and published it on 16 June 2025 in the trademark journal.
This step is towards strengthening Dhoni’s brand. They can use it for goods, clothes and coaching academy. Earlier, a company, Prabha Skill Sports, also applied for this name. But his application is in the position of ‘Recification filed’.
Dhoni recently joined the ICC Hall of Fame. He is the 11th Indian cricketer who received this honor. He captained Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, but the team did not reach the playoffs. Nevertheless, Dhoni’s influence remains in cricket and branding.
