What is Rampur Tiraha incident?
What happened in the year 1994 at Rampur Tiraha in Muzaffarnagar on the night of October 1 and October 2 is a black spot in the history of the country. In fact, the protesters made a strategy to stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding the creation of a separate state for Uttarakhand. Under this, hundreds of people from Kumaun and Garhwal divisions boarded buses and left for Delhi. These agitators were stopped by the police at Rampur intersection in Muzaffarnagar. There was also a clash between the police and the agitators.
Allegations were made that late on the night of October 1, several policemen molested and raped the agitating women. After this, by morning, more agitators reached there and pelted stones at the police. After this the police started firing in which 7 agitators were killed. Later the matter reached Allahabad High Court where a CBI investigation was ordered. Later the High Court sentenced one policeman to seven years and two others to two years each. Every Chief Minister of Uttarakhand comes to the Martyr Memorial at Rampur Tiraha on 2nd October to pay tribute to these agitators.
