The police have formed 18 special teams to locate and arrest the accused of violence in Nagpur city of Maharashtra. The officials gave this information on Thursday.
So far 69 people have been detained in connection with the violence on Monday. Curfew continues in many areas of the city on the third day on Thursday.
A senior official said that the police have identified 200 accused and efforts are being made to identify other suspects with CCTV footage.
On Monday, five FIRs (FIRs) were lodged in Ganeshpeth and Kotwali police stations, nominated by 200 people.
The official said efforts are on to identify others involved in the violence with the help of CCTV footage.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singhal told reporters on Wednesday that the special team formed included Ganeshpeth, Kotwali and Tehsil Police Police Station as well as crime branch personnel.
Another official said that the team is working closely with the cyber cell to identify the suspects.
Faheem Khan, the leader of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP), is among the 69 people arrested so far in connection with the Nagpur violence.
Officials had earlier said that Khan had allegedly led the protests outside the Nagpur police station on Monday.
Police records show that Khan has been accused in many cases including power theft and protests in 2023-2024 earlier.
The FIR stated that a group of 50 to 60 people led by Khan illegally gathered outside the Ganeshpeth police station on Monday and submitted a memorandum against the Vishwa Hindu Parishad protests a day earlier.
Subsequently, Khan and eight other people arrived in Bhaldarpura area where 500 to 600 people from the minority community gathered near Shivaji Maharaj Chowk. An official said he was later arrested.
Asked whether Khan is the main conspirator of violence? Singhal said on Wednesday that the role of the people named in the FIR is being investigated.
