The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday declared Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the Vice President of India. The announcement was made a few weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation. The Vice Presidential election is scheduled on 9 September, while the last date for nomination is set on 22 August.
The name of the candidate for the post of Vice President was finalized at the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting on Sunday. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior party leaders. In the meeting, it was decided unanimously that CP Radhakrishnan should be made the candidate of NDA.
On this occasion, PM Modi tweeted (X) and said, “In his long public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan ji has created his unique identity with his dedication, humility and intelligence. While living in various positions, he has always focused on community service and empowerment of the underprivileged. It has been decided to nominate the Vice Presidential candidate. “
Last month, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on the first day of the monsoon session. He cited health related reasons in his resignation and informed it through a letter to the President. This is believed to be the main reason behind his resignation that his health was being affected due to continuous busy programs and public duties. However, one side also says that his government’s clash had increased on many issues. Dhankad’s resignation was unprecedented in itself.
CP Radhakrishnan is currently the Governor of Maharashtra. Political experts say that CP Radhakrishnan’s name is also considered suitable for the post of Vice President because he has a thorough understanding of the Constitution and his administrative experience has long been playing an important role in India’s politics. In addition, it is also strategically important for the NDA to select a strong and prestigious leader to the post of Vice President.
The post of Vice President plays an important role in Parliament’s work and constitutional responsibilities. It not only serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, but also discharge constitutional duties in the absence of the President. In such a situation, both health and experience are considered important for this post.
With the nomination of CP Radhakrishnan, NDA has made it clear that they want to maintain their strong hold in the Vice Presidential elections. Now the election process will be completed by 22 August with nomination and voting on 9 September.
