NEET-UG 2024 will not be held again, Supreme Court rejects review petition

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the petition seeking review of the August 2 decision. In this decision, the top court had refused to conduct the NEET-UG 2024 examination afresh. The court also rejected the request to hear the case in open court. This petition was filed by Kajal Kumari, in which it was said that due to paper leak in the examination, re-examination should be held keeping in mind the interest of all the candidates. With this order of the Supreme Court, it has become clear that the examination will not be held again.

The court gave the reason for rejecting the petition

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra said that there is no error in the decision. He said that even after looking at the records, no such mistake was found which would indicate that reconsideration is necessary. The court said that under Order XLVII Rule 1 of the Supreme Court Rules 2013, there is no case for reconsideration in this case, hence the petition is dismissed.

Talk of earlier order and paper leak

Earlier on August 2, the Supreme Court had refused to re-conduct NEET-UG 2024, saying that the incidents of paper leaks across the country were not widespread and were limited to only two places. For this reason, it is not practical to cancel the examination at all centres. The court had also clarified that they had no evidence to suggest that the leak was systemic or had an impact across the country. On this basis the demand for reconsideration was rejected.

Appointment of panel and recommendation of reforms

The central government had constituted a panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the examination process. This panel will review the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and submit its report on measures to improve the examination system. The Supreme Court said that this report of the panel will be helpful in removing possible flaws in the examination system.
