If you travel on highways or expressways daily and have your own car, then this news has brought good news for you. Now, under a new system introduced by the government, you will not have to pay toll tax for a distance of up to 20 km. This facility is only for private vehicles, not for taxis or commercial vehicles.
What is GNSS technology?
The government has introduced a technology called Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which tracks the location of a vehicle. If your car has GNSS installed and it is active, you can travel on highways or expressways for up to 20 km without paying any toll tax.
How will this system work?
The government has amended the National Highway Fee Rules, 2008 and said that if your vehicle travels up to 20 kms per day, then you will not be charged toll tax. But if your vehicle travels more than 20 kms, then toll will be charged on that additional distance. The toll will be calculated according to the distance that your vehicle has actually travelled.
Use of GNSS with Fastag
GNSS technology will also work with Fastag. That is, even if you have Fastag, you can still take advantage of this new technology. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that this new system will reduce the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas and will also reduce the problem of traffic jams.
launch of pilot project
This new GNSS based toll system is being tested on Bengaluru-Mysore Highway (NH-275) in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar Highway (NH-709) in Haryana.
What will be the benefit?
No toll tax for 20 km: If you travel up to 20 km daily on highways or expressways, you will not have to pay any toll tax. Toll tax for longer distances: If your journey is more than 20 km, you will have to pay toll according to the additional distance. GNSS with Fastag: This new technology will also work with Fastag, which will reduce the need to stop at toll plazas and make travel easier.
This new system will make travelling on highways and expressways even easier and economical. GNSS technology will make toll payment for vehicles more transparent and convenient.
