The severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the coast at a very high speed. Dana can reach between Puri in Odisha and West Bengal Sagar Island at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour from the evening of October 24 to the morning of October 25, regarding which the Meteorological Department has issued an alert. The tension between these two states has increased. The Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday said it is on ‘high alert’ and has deployed its ships and aircraft to deal with any contingency arising from the cyclonic storm.
Storm will make landfall here
The storm will make landfall in Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal. India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the entire east coast from Puri to West Bengal coast is expected to be affected by cyclonic storm ‘Dana’. According to the IMD, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm and cross the coasts of northern Odisha and southern West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island on the morning of October 25. During this period, strong winds will blow at a speed of 100-110 kilometers per hour, which can reach up to 120 kilometers per hour.
These states will be affected
In West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over East and West Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and Jhargram districts on October 24 and 25. The weather office also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Purulia and Bankura districts on October 24 and 25.
IMD has issued orange alert (get ready to take action) of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal and Gajapati districts. . Apart from this, yellow alert of thunderstorm with heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) and lightning has been issued for isolated places in Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar ( Be careful) has also been released.
800 cyclone shelter centers ready
The Odisha government has kept ready about 800 cyclone shelter centres, in which people evacuated from sensitive areas will be kept. Officials have so far visited 250 cyclone shelter centres, where people will be kept after evacuation. Arrangements of food, water, medicine, electricity and other essential items were made for the people evacuated from various areas due to the cyclonic storm. Apart from 800 cyclone shelter centres, 500 additional temporary shelter camps have been set up in schools and colleges.
Schools and colleges closed for 3 days
In the official order issued by the Odisha government, it has been said that all the schools, colleges, universities, technical schools in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Nayagarh, Cuttack and Khurda districts. /Professional institutes, polytechnics and ITIs will remain closed for three days (23 to 25 October). Necessary instructions have been issued to the heads of various educational institutions in these 14 districts.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal said that her government is prepared to deal with the wrath of cyclone ‘Dana’. He said in Kolkata, “As a precautionary measure, all schools in seven districts will remain closed from October 23 to 26. We don’t want to take any risk. “Schools and colleges are sometimes used as shelters for people.”
Helicopters and ‘remote operating stations’ deployed
The Indian Coast Guard said in a statement that it is on ‘high alert’ and its dedicated personnel and resources are ready to provide assistance, rescue and relief. “The Coast Guard has strategically deployed its ships and aircraft to respond rapidly to any emergency,” the statement said. The Coast Guard has deployed helicopters and ‘remote operating stations’ at Haldia in West Bengal and Paradip in Odisha to disseminate regular weather warnings and safety advisories to fishermen and sailors.
These trains were canceled
In view of the threat of cyclonic storm Dana, more than 150 express and passenger trains passing through the South Eastern Railway (SER) area have been cancelled. South-East Railway official said that the canceled trains include Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, Kamakhya-Yesvantpur AC Express, Howrah-Puri Shatabdi Express, Howrah-Bhubaneswar Shatabdi Express and Howrah-Yesvantpur Express. The SER official said the canceled trains were scheduled to depart from their originating stations from October 23 to 25. Fishermen advised not to go to sea till 23-25 October
NDRF has so far deployed 13 teams in West Bengal to deal with any emergency. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to go into the sea from October 23 to 25. It has said that the wind speed on the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal is expected to reach 60 kilometers per hour and after that it will gradually increase further. Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has directed for complete evacuation of sensitive areas to ensure that no person is harmed due to the cyclone.
Kolkata airport also geared up
The Odisha government has also prepared a list of pregnant women who may deliver in the next 15 days. These women are being shifted to a nearby hospital, so that they can avoid any difficulty during the disaster. Some people are not ready to leave their homes due to fear of theft. In such a situation, the police have been instructed to intensify patrolling in those villages where people will be shifted to cyclone shelter centres. Kolkata airport authorities have started preparations to deal with any emergency as Cyclonic Storm ‘Dana’ is expected to pass through the coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha on October 25.
