India was engaged in efforts to extradite Tahwwur Rana for many years.
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency ie NIA said in a statement on Thursday that the extradition of Tawwur Hussain Rana, the main conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been successfully carried out. The central agency said, “This achievement is a result of the continuous and coordinated efforts of years, under which an attempt was made to bring the mastermind of this dreaded terror attack into the dock of justice.” Rana was detained in the US following actions initiated under the Indo-US extradition treaty. The extradition process was completed when Rana had no legal way to stop the move.
‘All the petitions of Tehwwur Rana were dismissed’
The NIA said in its statement, ‘The Central District Court of California ordered Rana’s extradition on 16 May 2023. After this, Rana filed several cases in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, but all were rejected. Then he filed the Rit of Circlerary Petitions, two Hebius petitions and an emergency application in the US Supreme Court, but it was also rejected. The Government of India started the process of extradition between the two countries after receiving the surrender warrant for the Wantate Terrorist from the US government. With the help of US Justice Department and US Sky Marshal, NIA along with other Indian intelligence agencies and NSG carried out the process.

The statement said, ‘India’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Home Affairs also successfully completed the matter by coordinating with the concerned officials of the US. Rana is alleged that he, along with members of terrorist organizations such as David Coleman Headley aka Dawood Geeud, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jahadi Islamic, and other conspirators in Pakistan, carried out a disastrous terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008, killing 166 people and injured in 2008. The NIA said in its statement that the Government of India has declared Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islamic as a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) Act (UAPA), 1967.
