Nine cases of meningitis have been reported in Nagaland so far this year, after which the state health department has issued public consultation and called for vigilance.
The state’s Health and Family Welfare Department stated that Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a potentially severe viral infection that spreads due to the Culex mosquitoes.
Culex mosquitoes thrive in stable water sources such as paddy fields and ponds.
‘Japanese encephalitis’ can cause inflammation in the brain and can cause serious complications or death.
The Health Department said in its consultation, “No special encephalitis is available for Japanese encephalitis, so dealing with symptoms is considered to be treatment.”
The consultation stated, “District health units have been instructed to increase monitoring, run fogging and increase public awareness. The Health Department has advised to seek medical help immediately if symptoms like high fever, headache, vomiting.”
