Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam on Friday said that no underworld gang is behind the knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. “The suspect detained in connection with the attack is not a member of any gang. No gang has carried out this attack,” Kadam told reporters in Pune.
The minister said, “No information has been given to the police till now by Saif Ali Khan that he is in any danger.”
“He has not asked for any security cover, but if he does, we will follow due process,” Kadam said. Khan (54) was seriously injured when a man attacked him multiple times with a knife in his 12th floor flat in Bandra on Thursday morning. The actor was stabbed at multiple places, including the neck, following which he underwent emergency surgery at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.
Doctors said on Friday that his condition is improving rapidly and he will be discharged from the hospital in two-three days.
Addressing a press conference in Pune, Kadam said Mumbai Police has detained a man whose face matches that of the suspected attacker, whose image was captured on CCTV cameras while he was fleeing the building.
He said that the person has a criminal record and the police is interrogating him. Asked about the involvement of any criminal gang in the attack, the minister said the preliminary investigation has ruled out any such angle. He said that so far theft seems to be the only motive behind the incident.
“Mumbai Police has detained a person whose face matches the one seen in the CCTV camera. Police are keeping an eye on one more person,” Kadam said.
