Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched ‘Mission Mausam’ on the occasion of the 150th foundation day of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This mission has been launched with the aim of making India a smart nation adapted to weather and climate change. The Prime Minister graced the occasion at a grand ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam, National Capital Delhi and released a commemorative coin issued by the IMD. Also released IMD Vision-2047 document for weather adaptation and climate change mitigation, which mentions various plans for weather forecasting, weather management and mitigating the effects of climate change.
What did PM say about IMD?
In his address, the Prime Minister said, “Today we are starting a new direction on this historic occasion of 150 years of the Indian Meteorological Department. This is not just the journey of IMD, but it symbolizes the journey of modern science and technology in India. Is also there.” He said that IMD has not only served crores of Indians but has also played an important role in India’s scientific journey. The Prime Minister also said that there has been unprecedented expansion of IMD’s infrastructure and technology in the last 10 years, making India a leader in the field of meteorology.
What is the objective of ‘Mission Mausam’?
Explaining the objectives of ‘Mission Mausam’, the Prime Minister said that this mission will prepare and provide solutions for India’s future climate related challenges. Its objective is to develop cutting-edge weather monitoring technologies and systems that will help in understanding meteorological processes through high-resolution atmospheric observations, next generation radars and satellites. Additionally, the mission will also focus on collection of air quality data, which will be helpful in formulating future climate management and intervention strategies.
To commemorate the 150th Foundation Day of IMD, programmes, activities will be organized to showcase the achievements of IMD during the last 150 years, its role in making India climate-resilient and the role played by government institutions in providing various weather and climate services.
