Expressing dissatisfaction over the life imprisonment of a man convicted in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that the responsibility of investigation has been transferred to Kolkata Police. “Forcibly” taken. He said that if Kolkata Police had been in charge of the investigation, it would definitely have ensured the death penalty.
Speaking to journalists in Murshidabad district, the Chief Minister raised questions on the CBI investigation in the case.
“We all had demanded death penalty (for the convict), but the court has awarded life imprisonment,” he said. The matter was forcibly taken away from us. Had he remained with the (Kolkata) police, we would have ensured that he gets death penalty.
The Chief Minister said, “We do not know how the investigation was conducted. Death penalty was ensured in many similar cases investigated by the state police. I am not satisfied (with the decision).”
A Sealdah court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment after convicting him of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On Saturday, the court of Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das had convicted Roy in the heinous crime of assault on a postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9 last year.
The incident was followed by unprecedented and prolonged protests across the country.
Judge Das said that this crime does not fall in the “rarest of the rare” category, due to which the culprit can be awarded death penalty.
