New Delhi. The One Nation-One Election Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha today amid huge uproar. During this period, despite the whip being issued, many BJP MPs remained absent from the House. It is believed that BJP can now send notices to its MPs who are not present in the House and seek their answers. 20 BJP MPs including Nitin Gadkari, Giriraj Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jagdambika Pal, Shantanu Thakur, BY Raghavendra, Vijay Baghel, Udayraj Bhosle, Bhagirath Chaudhary, Jagannath Sarkar and Jayant Kumar Roy were not present during the voting on the bill.
Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha, which provides for simultaneous holding of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country. Congress and other opposition parties strongly opposed this one country-one election bill. Electronic voting was conducted to introduce the bill in which 269 votes were cast in favor and 198 against. In this way the bill was introduced in the House after which it has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). Union Minister Meghwal also introduced another bill related to ‘One Country, One Election’, the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024, in the Lok Sabha today.
The path is difficult for BJP
Under this, assembly elections of Delhi, Jammu-Kashmir and Puducherry can also be held along with the Lok Sabha elections. However, BJP does not have sufficient numbers in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pass this bill. The figure of 362 is necessary for two-third majority in 543 seats of Lok Sabha. NDA currently has 292 seats. Of the 245 seats in Rajya Sabha, 164 seats are required for two-thirds majority. NDA has 112 seats, it also has the support of 6 nominated MPs. In this way the total figure became 118 but the majority figure is far away.
