New Delhi. One Nation One Election Bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha today. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will present two bills in the Lok Sabha regarding holding simultaneous elections in the country. Many articles of the Constitution are to be amended through a bill. At the same time, the second bill related to One Nation One Election will be related to holding elections along with Lok Sabha in Union Territories. Information has been received about the bill related to One Nation One Election that in the 5th sub-section of section number 2, a provision has been made that elections for the assembly of any state can be conducted separately. At present, it is believed that the Modi government will send this bill to JPC for consensus.
For this, a provision has been made in the One Nation One Election Bill that the Election Commission will recommend to the President to hold separate elections for the assembly of any state. The President will pass orders on this and then assembly elections can be held in the concerned state. Opposition parties were also raising the issue that if the government in a state falls before its tenure, then how will there be a democratic system under the One Nation One Election law? In such a situation, an attempt has been made to eliminate their concerns by making the provision of holding elections in separate states.
A new article 82A will be added to the Constitution through One Nation One Election Bill. Apart from this, changes are also to be made in Article 83 i.e. the tenure of the Houses of Parliament, Article 172 i.e. the tenure of the State Assemblies and Article 327 i.e. the delimitation of constituencies. The Modi government had formed a committee under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind to give suggestions on One Nation One Election. This committee had submitted its recommendations to President Draupadi Murmu through a report in March 2024. The recommendations were also accepted by the Modi cabinet. PM Narendra Modi had said in the year 2019 that to save the country’s expenditure and for the sake of good governance, there should be One Nation One Election. Even on the Independence Day of 2024, PM Modi had talked about One Nation One Election. Then on December 12, 2024, the Modi cabinet approved the One Nation One Election Bill.
