New Delhi: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has proposed to reinstate the ‘Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024’ and the related ‘Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, which provide for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country. For is kept in the lower house of the parliament. But the opposition is against this bill of Modi government. Congress is at number one among those opposing the “One Nation One Election” bill. Apart from this, Samajwadi Party is also against it. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress (TMC) is also against this bill. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also the biggest opponent of “One Nation One Election”. Among other opposition parties, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM, CPE (M) and Sharad Pawar-led party NCP are also strongly against this bill. Apart from BJP, all its allies, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), JDU, TDP, Apna Dal, LJP etc. are in favor of this bill.

What is One Country One Election Bill?

To implement its key plank of ‘one country, one election’, the ruling BJP on Thursday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Constitutional Amendment Bill to implement the concept of simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Had given. A high-level committee led by former President Ramnath Kovind had also proposed holding municipal and panchayat elections in a phased manner along with the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, but the Cabinet has decided to stay away from the issue of local body elections “for the time being”. Have decided to keep distance. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had expressed its commitment to this idea in its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

These parties are in support

BJP’s allies like Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in the Union Cabinet are supporting the concept. Citing the recommendations of the high-level committee, sources said that there is a proposal to amend Article 82A by adding sub-section (1) related to the due date in the bill. There will also be a proposal to include sub-section (2) in Article 82A related to the termination of the tenure of the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. It is also proposed to amend Article 83(2) and insert new sub-sections (3) and (4) related to the tenure of the Lok Sabha and its dissolution. It also has provisions relating to dissolution of assemblies and amendment of Article 327 to insert the words “simultaneous elections”.
