New Delhi. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the report of former President Ramnath Kovind Committee on One Nation, One Election. 15 opposition parties including Congress raised their voice against it. Now the Modi government has prepared to build a consensus with the opposition parties on the proposed law related to One Nation, One Election. According to the information, PM Modi has given the responsibility of building consensus with the opposition on the One Nation, One Election Bill to three ministers of his government, Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal. Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijiju and Rajnath Singh will meet the opposition leaders and try to persuade them to agree on the One Nation, One Election Bill.
There are opposition governments in many states of the country. These include Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Kerala. Modi government seems to be getting the support of many opposition parties on the issue of One Nation, One Election. BJD and Mayawati’s BSP have supported One Nation, One Election. However, the problem is that to pass the One Nation, One Election bill in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, constitutional amendment will have to be done and for this a two-third majority will be needed. Modi government or NDA alliance does not have that many. Apart from this, the Legislative Assembly of at least 15 states of the country also has to vote in favor of the constitutional amendment related to One Nation, One Election.
If the law of One Nation, One Election is made, then it will save about 5000 crore rupees in election expenses. After the law of One Nation, One Election is made, the elections of Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas will be held simultaneously. Within 100 days of these elections, elections of all local bodies will also be held. For One Nation, One Election, a single voter list of Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and local bodies will also be prepared. Currently, the voter list is different for every election and due to this, news of names of many voters disappearing keeps coming.
