‘Vanjee’ Ramaiya, who was awarded the Padma Shri Award, died on Saturday in Khammam district of Telangana. Family sources gave this information.
Sources associated with Ramaiya’s family said that he suffered a heart attack in the ancestral house located in Reddypalli village. He was 87 years old.
Daripalli Ramaiya was also known as ‘Chettu (Tree) Ramaiya’ or ‘Vanjee’ in Khammam district. Ramaiya planted more than one crore saplings in the last several decades. He was given the Padma Shri Award for 2017 for his contribution to the environment.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy mourned Ramaiya’s death and said that his death is an ‘irreparable loss’ for the society.
According to a statement issued from the Chief Minister’s office, Reddy said that Daripalli Ramaiya firmly believed that the existence of mankind was not possible without nature and environment. The Chief Minister expressed deep condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
