The Delhi Police in its preliminary investigation has found that the stampede at the New Delhi railway station was because the passengers were confused between ‘Prayagraj Express and Prayagraj Special’ and they felt that their train could be missed. Police sources gave this information on Sunday.
Sources said that according to preliminary investigation, the confusion was due to the announcement of the initial name ‘Prayagraj’ of the trains.
Confusion arose among the passengers waiting for the arrival of ‘Prayagraj Special’ on platform 16, as Prayagraj Express was already on platform 14.
Sources said that the people who reached the platform 14 felt that their train was coming on platform 16 and they ran towards him, causing a stampede.
In addition to this, there were four trains going to Prayagraj, out of which three were running late, causing unexpected crowds.
An eyewitness told PTI, “There was confusion among the passengers over the change of the train’s name and platform, which eventually caused the accident.”
Last Saturday evening stampede was killed at least 18 people.
