Personality/Jagjit Singh Dallewal: Life for farmers

Dallewal made everything in the name of family members before sitting on hunger strike, now only the peasant movement in their life

On the Khanauri border of Haryana-Punjab, 68-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dalawal, who was sitting on the fast unto-death (64 days till January), was covered with a blue blanket with a flower print. When the concerns about his health increased, a bench of the Supreme Court asked the Punjab government to present a full set of medical reports so that the court took opinion about the health of Dalawal from the Medical Board constituted by the Director of AIIMS in Delhi. Can go. ” On the completion of 54 days of Dallewal’s fast, the Union Ministry of Agriculture, Joint Secretary Priyaranjan, reached the Khanouri border with an invitation to the conversation. In a long meeting with the farmer leaders, after agreeing in several points, the next meeting between the government and the farmers was scheduled to be held in Chandigarh on 14 February. After this Jagjit Singh Dallewal agreed to seek medical assistance. Nutrients are now being pumped through drip in the vein of cancer patients at the protest site. They keep giving instructions to their colleagues in the midst of repeated nausea.

The United Kisan Morcha (SKM non-political) convenor Dalawal announced a hunger strike on November 26, 2024, “to reach the government’s ear”. The demand of farmers includes a legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for the purchase of produce. 75 -year -old farmer Sucha Singh of Tarn Taran Sahib has reached Khanouri after traveling 250 km. He says, “They are fighting for farmers. They are standing in front of the Modi government for us.” Sushcha Singh is one of the 111 farmers who sat on a hunger strike on 15 January 2025 in support of Dalawal. Ten farmers from Hisar, Sonepat, Panipat and Jind districts of Haryana also started a fast unto death in support of Dalalwal on 17 January. After this, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Swarn Singh Pandher, from Shambhu Border, announced the Delhi Cooch again under the new program.

The second protest-the command of the Shambhu border is in the hands of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha of Swarn Singh Pandher. Khanouri has a front of SKM (Non-Political) and Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta (Siddhupur). SKM (non-political) farmers’ nationwide umbrella organization is separated from SKM, which led the 2020-21 farmer protests. As Dalawal’s health is deteriorating, there is increasing discomfort among hundreds of farmers who have been protesting for almost a year in Khanouri, Shambhu and Ratanpura. A senior leader of SKM (non-political) said, “We are all praying for the health of Dallewal. If something happens to them, the situation may be uncontrollable.”

Born on October 4, 1958 in a Kisan family in Dalawala village of Faridkot district, Jagjit Singh Dalawal has a Masters degree in political science. His 66 -year -old sister Jasvir Kaur says, “She has always been interested in farming and solving farmers’ problems.” Ever since his brother is sitting on hunger strike, he has been camping outside his glass circle near the stage. She says with tearful eyes, “How can I leave my brother alone here?” Despite getting an SI job in Punjab Police, Dalawal chose work for farmers. For the last 44 years, he has been working as a member of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta (Siddhupur) for farmers and laborers.

BKU Ekta (Siddhupur) was formed by Sardar Pishora Singh Siddhupur, who was its first president in 1994. Dalawal was impressed by him in his youth. After his death in 2017, Dalawal was elected president. Prior to that he was the president of Faridkot district of the group for 18 years. When he took charge, BKU Ekta (Siddhupur), which is limited to eight-ten districts, is now present in every district of Punjab and has become the second largest farmer union in the state.

His son Gurpinder Singh, who is taking care of the house after staring at the front of Dalawal’s Khanauri border since last year, says that the issue of farmers is before the family. In February 2018, he led a tractor march to Delhi seeking implementation of the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission. In March, he attended the hunger strike of Anna Hazare at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. Prior to that, Dalawal performed in Punjab for 35 days. In January 2019, he went a five -day hunger strike in Chandigarh and went on another hunger strike in January 2021 when he became part of the sequential hunger strike on the Delhi border as part of the big farmer protest against the three controversial agricultural laws brought by the Central Government. .

In November 2022, Dalawal went on another hunger strike after comments against the farmer unions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In June 2023, Dalawal launched another hunger strike during the protest outside the headquarters of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited in Patiala over 21 demands including water and electricity issues for farmers. A week later, he was forcibly hospitalized by the Punjab Police. The current hunger strike is his sixth and longest. Dalawal launched a hunger strike on November 26, 2024 on the occasion of the anniversary of farmers’ protests.

During the 2020-21 peasant movement, Dalawal came to know of prostate cancer. They have been getting chemotherapy for four years. Despite this, he has been active for firstly against agricultural laws and then other demands including MSP’s legal guarantee and loan waiver for farmers and laborers. Some people claim that Dalawal has distanced BKU Ekta (Siddhupur) from the leftist trend of Pishora Siddhupur. His participation in the Anna movement enhances such criticisms, but a senior leader of the SKM (non-political) says that Dalalwal is against religious fundamentalism and has been avoiding to comment on Sikh fundamentalism and Khalistan. Dalawal says that he is not interested in electoral politics. He and his colleagues say that hunger strike is “no political stunts” and Dalawal is on the way to “martyrdom”.

After announcing the strike last November, Faridkot went to his house to prepare the will to prepare the will. He lost his wife on 27 January 2024, a few days before the proposed date to start the protest, but without being distracted by it, he addressed the farmers in a mahapanchayat in Haryana on 3 February, where he said, “who It is done, it is the desire of the one above, but the farmer fraternity is also my family and I want to put all my strength for him. ” It seems that Dallawal, who is on fast by writing a will in the name of son and daughter-in-law, has really made the question of his life and death.
