PM launches 'Mission Mausam', releases commemorative coin on 150th Foundation Day of IMD

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched ‘Mission Mausam’ on the occasion of the 150th Foundation Day of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) with the aim of making the country a ‘smart nation’ to face every weather and climate.

Attending the function held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, the Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin on the 150th Foundation Day of IMD and the IMD Vision-2047 document for meteorological resilience and climate change adaptation.

This includes weather forecasting, weather management and climate change mitigation plans. Earlier, the Prime Minister also visited an exhibition based on the achievements of IMD at the Bharat Mandapam.

In his address on this occasion, the Prime Minister said, “Today we are celebrating 150 years of the Indian Meteorological Department i.e. IMD. This is not just the journey of the Indian Meteorological Department, it is also the journey of modern science and technology in our India. “

He said that IMD has not only served crores of Indians but has also become a symbol of India’s scientific journey. The Prime Minister said that research and innovation in scientific institutions is part of the ethos of the new India. He said, “Therefore, there has been unprecedented expansion of IMD’s infrastructure and technology in the last 10 years. PM Modi said that to make India a ‘smart nation’ to face climate, we have also launched ‘Mission Mausam. “Mission Mausam also symbolizes India’s commitment to a sustainable future and preparedness for the future,” he said.

‘Mission Mausam’ aims to achieve high level capabilities by developing state-of-the-art weather monitoring technologies and systems, implementing high-resolution atmospheric observations, next generation radars and satellites and high-performance computers. It will also focus on improving the understanding of weather and climate processes, providing air quality data that will assist in formulating weather management and intervention strategies in the long run.

To commemorate the 150th Foundation Day of IMD, programmes, activities will be organized to showcase the achievements of IMD during the last 150 years, its role in making India climate-resilient and the role played by government institutions in providing various weather and climate services. And a series of workshops have been conducted.
