Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and appreciated “stable progress” in India-China relations. During this meeting, there was a discussion on further strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries. PM Modi wrote on the social media forum X, “Since my meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year, there has been a stable progress in India-China relations respecting each other’s interests and sensitivity.”
During the meeting, Wang Yi handed over a message and invitation to PM Modi on behalf of President Xi Jinping for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. The summit is scheduled to be held on 31 August in Tianjin, China. Describing the meeting as important, PM Modi said, “I am waiting for our next meeting during the SCO summit in Tianjin. Stable, projected and creative relations between India and China can contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity.”
Earlier, Wang Yi also met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability on the border, PM Modi said, “Peace and stability on the border should be our priority. I repeat the commitment for a fair, rational and intermittent solution of the border question from India.”
The meeting is being seen as a positive step after the stressful situation of recent years in India-China relations. Last year, after the meeting of PM Modi and President Xi during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, there were indications of improvement in relations between the two countries. In that meeting, PM Modi said, “It is our priority to maintain peace on the border. Mutual trust, respect and sensitivity should be the basis of our relationship.”
The SCO Summit to be held on 31 August will be PM Modi’s first visit to China after 2018. This meeting can be an important step towards promoting confidence restoration and creative dialogue between the two countries.
