New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi fiercely targeted Congress in the special discussion held in the Lok Sabha on the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. The PM said, Congress has become so obsessed with amending the Constitution that it has been hunting the Constitution from time to time. This blood came into my mouth. Not only this, Congress kept bleeding the spirit of the Constitution. The Constitution was changed 75 times in nearly 6 decades. The seed which was sown by the country’s first Prime Minister (Jawaharlal Nehru), was given fertilizer and water by another Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Modi said, the Congress government had cut off the wings of the court by amending the Constitution in 1971. Parliament can amend the Constitution whatever it wants and the court cannot even look at it. All the powers of the court were taken away and this sin was committed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was determined to amend the Constitution and there was no one to stop him, hence when Indira ji’s election was rejected by the court because it was fought in an unconstitutional manner and she had to resign from the post of MP, she got angry and left her chair. To save the country, emergency was imposed. India’s democracy was strangled.

The Prime Minister said, we also amended the Constitution, but for the unity of the country, to empower women and OBCs. Modi said, tampering with the Constitution and weakening its spirit has been in the veins of the Congress party.

The Prime Minister said, for BJP the sanctity of the Constitution is paramount and these are not just words. Whenever we have been tested, we have emerged stronger. I want to give an example, in 1996 BJP emerged as the largest party. The President invited the single largest party to form the government in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution. But, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji did not adopt the path of bargaining, but chose the path of respecting the Constitution, accepted defeat by one vote and resigned. This is our history, this is our values, this is our tradition.
