Rahul Gandhi may get into trouble, CBI starts investigation regarding citizenship dispute

New Delhi. Investigation has started into the alleged British citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In this regard, Delhi High Court was informed on Wednesday that investigation is going on by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the PIL filed in Allahabad High Court. BJP member from Karnataka Vignesh Shishir has filed this PIL. Vignesh Shishir, who appeared virtually in this case before the division bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, said that he has presented confidential evidence before the CBI. The proceedings of this case have currently proceeded in the Allahabad High Court, where Shishir has sought time to place on record important documents related to the petition submitted by him.

During this, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy also appeared in the Delhi High Court. Swamy, in his PIL, has requested the Central Government to direct him to file a status report on the complaint filed against the Congress leader. The bench ordered all the parties to file affidavits along with the application within two weeks.

Swamy alleged in his petition that Gandhi had violated the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 and Article 9 of the Indian Constitution by declaring himself a British citizen to the British government. According to Swamy, if a person voluntarily acquires the citizenship of a foreign state, Indian citizenship automatically ceases. He also claimed that Gandhi was working as a director and secretary in a company named Backops Limited, registered in the United Kingdom in 2003, in which Gandhi’s nationality was stated to be British. The next hearing of the case will now be held on December 6.
