New Delhi. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has given 4 weeks to the Union Home Ministry to respond to the issue of citizenship of Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The next hearing of the case will now be held on 21 April. The Ministry of Home Affairs had sought 8 weeks from the court but the High Court Bench rejected the request. The petition has been filed by Karnataka’s lawyer and BJP member S Vignesh Shishir in which he has claimed to have a British citizenship with Rahul Gandhi and demanded that his Indian citizenship be canceled.
The petitioner accused this, citing the confidential mail of the British government. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi had hidden his British citizenship. Since Rahul Gandhi also has citizenship of Britain, he is disqualified to contest elections under Article 84 (A) of the Indian Constitution. In this context, the petitioner has also demanded Rahul Gandhi’s cancellation of Sansadi from the High Court Bench. The petitioner has also said in his petition that Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship is a offense under the Indian Justice Code and Passport Act, the court should order to investigate the entire case and file a case against the Congress MP.
Earlier, during the hearing held on December 19, the High Court Bench had directed the Union Home Ministry to present the details of the action in this regard in the court on 24 March. However, during the hearing today, the government did not present the details. Let us tell you that BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had earlier filed a petition claiming to have British citizenship with Rahul Gandhi.
