A Kolkata court on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy, accused in the case of rape and murder of a doctor on duty at RG Kar Hospital.
Sealdah court’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das, who is hearing the case, said he will pronounce the sentence in the case on Monday.
The verdict was delivered nearly two months after the in-camera hearing that began in November last year and 162 days after the heinous crime took place on August 9, 2024.
Accused Sanjay Roy was found guilty of rape and murder under sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS).
Under BNS 103(1), there are provisions for minimum life imprisonment and maximum death penalty.
At the time of the verdict, Roy claimed in the court that he had been framed, to which the judge said he would be given a chance to present his case before the sentencing on Monday.
The parents of the deceased thanked the judge for convicting the accused.
