The mother of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital, said that she and her husband would like to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ask for justice for their daughter.
Speaking on International Women’s Day on Saturday, the bereaved mother also questioned the safety of women in West Bengal.
He said, “I want to meet the Prime Minister and appeal to him to intervene in this matter and look at our appeal of justice for our deceased doctor.”
On August 9 last year, a 31 -year -old junior doctor was murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata after raping her, causing resentment throughout the country.
He claimed, “Our daughter had great dreams and we never thought that she would have to die like this. It has been seven months since she left, but where is justice? We do not even have a death certificate.”
He questioned, “If a female doctor is insecure at her workplace, where is her protection?”
Reacting to the mother’s wish to meet the Prime Minister, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said, “There is a process to seek time to meet the Prime Minister. I am confident that our Prime Minister will give him (parents) some time and hear his appeal.”
On contacting, Trinamool Congress leader and state Finance Minister Chandima Bhattacharya said, “No one in this country has the right to ask for time to meet the Prime Minister. But we should not forget that it was our leader Mamata Banerjee who took the first step and the criminal was arrested.”
A session court in the city on 20 January sentenced Sanjay Roy, a civilian volunteer of Kolkata Police, convicted of a rape and murder case, to death imprisonment.
Both the CBI and the state government filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court demanding the death penalty for Roy.
The Calcutta High Court on 7 February refused to accept the state government’s appeal in which it challenged Rai from the lifetime of life imprisonment to death, while accepting a similar petition of the Central Investigation Agency.
