New Delhi. Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, convicted in the 1984 anti -Sikh riots, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court. The Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi had convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the case of murder of a man and son. The Delhi Police and the victim’s family appealed to the court to sentence Sajjan Kumar to death. This case is of Saraswati Vihar in Delhi. The Delhi Police described the murder case on Sajjan Kumar in the court as more serious than the Nirbhaya case. At the same time, the police had said that the 1984 anti -Sikh riot is a serious crime against humanity. Sajjan Kumar has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of violence and murder in Delhi Cantt.
Sajjan Kumar had declared the allegations against himself in the murder of father and son in Saraswati Vihar as false. Anil Sharma was a lawyer in this case on behalf of Sajjan Kumar. Sharma had said in the court that Sajjan Kumar’s name was not before in the murder case during the anti -Sikh riots at Saraswati Vihar. Sajjan Kumar had argued in the court that the witness took his name 16 years after the incident. On this, the government lawyer had said in the court that the victim side did not know Sajjan Kumar earlier. Later the family came to know about Sajjan Kumar. After which he took the name of Sajjan Kumar.
The Modi government formed an SIT to investigate the anti -Sikh riots after assuming power at the Center. The SIT had alleged that Sardar Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh were attacked during the anti -Sikh riots in Raj Nagar of Saraswati Vihar area of Delhi. The SIT had alleged that Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh were beaten first by the rioters and they died. The SIT had said in the charge sheet that the crowd of rioters was led by Sajjan Kumar. Sajjan Kumar provoked the crowd. Sikh riots were investigated by Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission. There was a case against Sajjan Kumar on the basis of the testimony given in it.
