Sambhal administration on Wednesday started digging of the ancient well near Shahi Jama Masjid in Kot Garvi area on which complaint of illegal encroachment was received. According to the local people, this well has historical and religious importance.
Speaking to reporters, local resident Sanjay Kumar said, “This well is located near the Harihar temple. It used to be a place of worship, where people used to come on auspicious occasions like birth of a child or marriage. It was covered over later.” And its original form was changed. The excavation will restore its historical form.”
Speaking to reporters, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shirish Chandra said that the digging was started after the local people complained about illegal covering of the well.
“Preliminary investigation shows that the well was covered by encroachment. We are digging to restore it and appropriate legal action will be taken after further investigation,” he said.
Asked whether the well was of historical importance, the ASP said, “According to the local people and elderly residents, this well has been present for centuries. This will be confirmed as the excavation progresses.”
