New Delhi. Senior leader of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has been convicted in a defamation case. The Shivdi Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Mumbai has sentenced the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP to 15 days in jail. Not only this, a fine of 25 thousand rupees has also been imposed on him. This defamation case against Sanjay Raut was filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. Sanjay Raut had accused Medha Somaiya of involvement in the toilet scam of Rs 100 crore.
Medha had filed a defamation case of Rs 100 crore against Raut for these allegations. Medha had demanded action against Raut under sections 499 (making or publishing any kind of allegation) and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. Raut has been convicted under section 500. Kirit Somaiya’s wife Medha is a professor of organic chemistry at Ruia College in Mumbai and also runs an NGO named Yuva Pratishthan.
Sanjay Raut had written in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana Online in April 2022 that Medha Somaiya, through her husband Kirit Somaiya, using his political powers, got her NGO Yuva Pratishthan the contract for construction of toilets in Mira-Bhayander area of Mumbai. Through this contract, Medha Somaiya committed a scam in the construction of toilets. After this article became public, this matter was in the headlines. Calling these allegations of Raut completely baseless, Medha Somaiya had said that this is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of me and my husband. Medha had also asked Sanjay Raut to present evidence in this regard.
