The lower court convicted a person from Jharkhand for harassing and harassing his wife living separately for dowry. In 2015, the lower court convicted him under Section 498A (cruelty to married women) of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to two and a half years rigorous imprisonment in addition to a fine of Rs 5,000. The case was registered in 2009 and spent 11 months in custody.

On 24 September 2024, the Jharkhand High Court reduced the sentence to one and a half years and increased the fine to one lakh rupees. The couple were married in 2003 and the wife living separately remained in her in -laws’ house for about four months, after which she allegedly tortured Rs 50,000 for dowry demand.
