Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Tianjin, China on Saturday. This is his first visit to China in the last seven years. During this time he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Modi’s visit to Japan is taking place immediately after the visit, where he emphasized on strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as transport, space cooperation and trade. Their meetings in China are considered diplomatic and economically very important.
The Prime Minister will remain in China till 1 September. During this time, he will have a high-level conversation with Xi Jinping, in which the India-China economic relations will be reviewed and the steps to normalize the relationship will be discussed. The relations between the two countries have been tense in recent years, especially after the 2020 border. In such a situation, this meeting is being seen as the possibility of giving new direction to relationships.
Along with this, Modi will also attend the annual summit of SCO, which includes important members like China, Russia and Central Asian Republic. This conference is being held at a time when the United States has announced a 50 percent tariff on India, which has been effective since Wednesday. The move has increased pressure on India’s exports and the discovery of new trading prospects has become even more important.
Analysts believe that Modi’s visit may prove to be a turn for India-China relations, provided the two countries indicate behavioral cooperation. While the platform of the SCO gives the opportunity for multilateral talks, Modi-shee’s meeting is expected to emphasize on financial cooperation. This journey can open the way for cautious but positive progress.
