Police has detained more than 10 students to protest against the disciplinary action of the university on two PhD students at Jamia Millia Islamia University. An official gave this information on Thursday.
PhD students were given a ‘show cause’ notice to hold protests last year. The protest against this action began on Monday and the students condemned the administration’s move.
The university claimed that the protesting students damaged the property of the university, including the ‘Central Canteen’ and broke the door of the security advisor’s office, forcing the administration to take action.
According to police sources, the university requested the police to intervene to remove the students from the protest site so that the law and order remains intact.
A police source said, “After receiving the request from the university administration, we removed more than 10 students from the protest site at four o’clock in the morning. Apart from this, we deployed a large number of police personnel outside the campus to maintain law and order. Are.”
Sharing a statement received from the university, another police officer said that more than 10 students have been detained and investigation is on.
The university said in a statement that some students called for protest and illegally gathered in the academic ‘block’ on the evening of 10 February.
The statement said, “Since then, they have not only obstructed the peaceful operation of classes, but have also stopped other students from reaching the ‘Central Library’ and participating in classrooms at a time when the middle semester examinations are going to start Are.”
Demonstrating students are demanding no disciplinary action against students participating in protests.
The university’s disciplinary committee will hold a meeting on 25 February, in which the role of two PhD students will be reviewed in organizing the “Jamia Resistance Day” on 15 December 2024. “Jamia Resistance Day” is observed every year on the anniversary of demonstrations in 2019 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
