New Delhi. Who knows when will Delhi and surrounding areas get relief from air pollution? Pollution had started increasing in and around Delhi even before Diwali. This trend is still continuing. There was severe pollution in many areas of Delhi in the early hours of Saturday. The air quality i.e. AQI level was recorded more than 400 in Delhi’s Bawana, New Motibagh, Rohini and Vivek Vihar. Whereas, in other areas of Delhi the AQI level remained between 300 to 400. At the same time, very poor air quality was also recorded in Faridabad, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida adjacent to Delhi.

Pollution increases every year in Delhi and surrounding areas even before the onset of winter. The main reason for this is burning of stubble in the fields of Punjab, Haryana and Western UP. Compared to Western UP and Haryana, this year also Punjab has witnessed the highest number of incidents of stubble burning. This information was also given to the Supreme Court through an affidavit. After which the Supreme Court asked the states what action was taken against the farmers who burn stubble. In response, the court learned that states registered cases against farmers and imposed nominal fines. The Supreme Court reprimanded the states on this. After being reprimanded by the states, the Central Government recently increased the fine for burning stubble to Rs 5000, Rs 10000 and Rs 30000.

Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party government earlier claimed that it would end the problem of stubble burning through bio-decomposable chemicals. It was also sprayed in fields at many places in Delhi. Despite this, the people of Delhi and NCR are not getting any relief from the problem of stubble and the pollution caused by burning it. In all these areas, people have to face poisonous air which spoils their health every year. We will get relief from air pollution only when it rains and at present there are no chances of that happening.
