Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has described 25% tariff on India by US President Donald Trump as ‘serious’. He said that this tariff can ruin the trade between India and the US. Trump announced 25% tariff on India. Many experts have given statements about its loss.
Shashi Tharoor said that 25% tariff imposed by Trump on India is quite serious. This is because Trump has also talked about installing penalty to buy oil and defense products from Russia. If this happens, this 25% tariff can increase to 35-45%. Negotiations are also going on in the US on the installation of 100% tariffs. If this happens, the trade between India and the US may be completely ruined.
In a conversation with news agency ANI, he said that talks are going on between the two countries regarding the trade deal. Hopefully it will be completed soon. However, if this is not done, trade will be badly affected as America is a major trading partner in India. He further said that the Trump government should also take care of the needs of India.
“If Trump is demanding improper demand, our negotiators have the right to oppose it. Our tariffs are not so unfair. It is about 17% on an average. US goods prices are not competitive in the Indian market.”
Tharoor described the ongoing trade deal between India and the US as challenging. He said that it is not that our trade agreement is going on with America only. We are in touch with many countries. The European Union is having talks, talks with the UK and we are also in touch with many other countries. We do not have a shortage of options. We should diversify our business.
