National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah said on Friday that the signature campaign declared by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to restore the status of Jammu and Kashmir will be strongly run.
Farooq told reporters after attending the Independence Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium, “The campaign will be carried out and it will be a strong campaign.”
The NC President was making this comment on the question related to the announcement of the Chief Minister’s announcement of launching a signature campaign. The campaign has been announced to start after the Supreme Court’s comment stating that the Pahalgam terrorist attack should be taken into consideration while deciding to restore state status.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gawai said that “ground reality” should also be given attention to the region while deciding to restore the state status of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that “incidents like Pahalgam” cannot be ignored.
Omar Abdullah said that he would launch a major signature campaign to pressurize Jammu and Kashmir to restore state status. The Supreme Court has given the Center eight weeks to respond to the petition.
He said in his Independence Day address at Bakshi Stadium, “From today, we will use these eight weeks to go door-to-door in all 90 assembly constituencies to run a signature campaign to restore state status. If people are not ready to sign the document, I will accept my defeat. ”
When asked if the Chief Minister’s speech was a strict message, the Nekan Chairman agreed that a clear message has been given.
Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said that after several years, he was getting mixed feelings in his mind while attending the Independence Day celebrations.
He said, “There were tears as well as happiness. Tear because I have been the Chief Minister here, we had Article 370, Article 35A and we had state status. ”
In response to a question on the cloudburst incident in Kishtwar, the NC leader said that more than 500 people are still feared buried in the debris.
