Sikh youth questioned Rahul Gandhi
BJP leader Amit Malviya, while sharing a video of Rahul Gandhi, has said that he is being made fun of worldwide. India TV does not confirm this video, but according to NDTV news, the video is two weeks old, when Rahul Gandhi went to a dialogue at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs of Brown University in the US. While sharing the video, Amit Malviya said that the Sikh person has reminded Rahul Gandhi of the “baseless fear-promotion” made during his visit to America. He said, “It is absolutely unprecedented that Rahul Gandhi is now being ridiculed not only in India but worldwide.”
The Sikh person asked Rahul Gandhi, “You create fear among the Sikhs that what the BJP will look like, you said that there should be no fear in politics, we just do not want to wear a tough, we do not just want to tie a turban, we want freedom of expression, which was not allowed in the Congress party rule in the past.”
Allegations against Congress party
The young Sikh said that the Anandpur Sahib proposal talks about Dalit rights and does not mention separatism, but the then Congress called it a separatist document. He said, “This is something that your party has done, there is a lack of maturity in your party to accept your mistakes.” The Sikh man mentioned former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who has been convicted for the 1984 riots killing, and said, “There are many more Sajjan Kumar sitting in the Congress party.”
The Sikh person said, “You tell us to fear what the ‘BJP of BJP’ will look like, but you did not try to reconcile with the Sikhs. What are you trying, because if you continue this way, the BJP will also make its place in Punjab.”
Rahul Gandhi’s answer
In his reply, Rahul Gandhi said that he does not think that Sikhs are afraid of anything. He said, “The statement I made was whether we want India where people are uncomfortable expressing their religion? As far as the mistakes of the Congress party are concerned, many of them made mistakes when I was not there, but I am very happy to take responsibility for every mistake made by the Congress party in my history. I have publicly said that what happened in the 80s was wrong, I am very good relations with Sikh community.”
The Sikh person in his question mentioned Rahul Gandhi’s statement in which he said that “the fight in India is whether the Sikh would be allowed to wear a turban, whether the Sikh will be allowed to wear a tough or will be allowed to go to the gurudwara.”
What happened in 1980?
In the 1980s, the Indira Gandhi government crushed the separatist movement in Punjab under the leadership of radical campaigner Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhindranwale hiding in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, one of the holiest sites of Sikhism, was killed by the Indian Army in the temple premises. During the army operation, the Akal Takht was converted into rubble, causing heavy resentment within the community.
A few months later Indira Gandhi was shot by her Sikh bodyguards. His assassination led to widespread violence against Sikhs. Many Congress leaders are suspected of promoting this violence. According to government estimates, more than 3,000 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and elsewhere. The way the Congress handled the situation, it also includes Rajiv Gandhi’s statement that “when a big tree falls, the ground moves”, it has repeatedly harassed the party. The BJP has repeatedly targeted the 1984 riots to respond to the political attacks on the Congress.
