The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influential Sharmishtha Panoli, who was arrested by the Kolkata Police for uploading a video with alleged communal comments.
The court admitted that the complaint against him does not disclose any cognizable offense.
Law student Panoli was arrested last week from Gurugram in Haryana, when an FIR was lodged against him at Garden Reich Police Station in Kolkata, where he made controversial remarks criticizing Bollywood actors on Operation Sindoor.
Police had said that the video now removed had “abusive and disrespectful” comments against the minority community.
A bench of Justice Raja Basu Chaudhary ordered him to be released on bail bond and security of Rs 10,000 and directed him to cooperate in the investigation of the case.
The court also directed him not to leave the country without his permission.
The High Court directed the police to provide security to Panoli, as it had complained of threats after social media posts.
