Chief Minister MK Stalin’s big announcement regarding Tamil Nadu’s autonomy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday announced to set up a committee to ensure the autonomy of the state. Stalin alleged that the rights of the states were gradually being taken away by the central government. He announced the formation of a committee headed by the retired judge of the Supreme Court on the matter, which will investigate the relations between the central and the state governments in detail.

The purpose of the formation of the committee?

The Chief Minister said that the main objective of this committee is to ensure the autonomy of the state. Former bureaucrat Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former Vice President of State Planning Commission M Naganathan will also be members in this committee constituted under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court Judge Kurien Joseph. The committee will present its interim report in 2026 and will submit its final report after two years.

The Chief Minister also clarified that this committee would study subjects which were earlier in the state list, but later they have been included in the concurrent list. Giving the example of National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET) especially, he said that this subject is beyond the jurisdiction of the state governments. Stalin said, “This committee will establish a new dialogue between the state and the central governments regarding the state’s autonomy.”

Statements on state autonomy

Chief Minister Stalin said in the assembly that this committee is an important step to protect the state’s autonomy. He said, “We are not only looking at the welfare of Tamil Nadu, but also taking into account the interests of other parts of the country like Gujarat, Kashmir, Northeast and Kerala.” He added, “This committee will ensure that the cultural rights of Tamil Nadu and other states are respected.”

Disclaiming attention strategy: AIADMK

The AIADMK launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Stalin and his party DMK. AIADMK said that this step of Stalin is only an attempt to distract public attention from the failures of the state government. AIADMK Deputy Leader R. B. Udayakumar said, “For the past several years, the DMK has not taken any concrete steps on the issue and now it is coming out as a political move before the election. It is the only focus strategy of the DMK before the 2026 assembly elections.”

Center is taking full care of the interests of states: BJP

The BJP also opposed the move and extended the assembly. Four BJP MLAs went out of the House during a discussion on the state’s autonomy. BJP leaders say that raising the issue of state’s autonomy only gives air to political issues, while the central government is taking full care of the interests of the states. (input language)
