Supreme Court Collegium Decision: Supreme Court Collegium changed the old rule for appointment of judges, now recommendations will not be made to the government just by looking at the file, Supreme Court Collegium change tradition for appointment of judges will meet the candidates

New Delhi. The Collegium has changed its old method for appointing judges of the Supreme Court and High Court. The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has decided that only the files of the nominees will not be considered for the appointment of judges. The Supreme Court Collegium will talk face to face with those nominated judicial officers and lawyers. In which it will be seen that the person whose proposal to make a judge is to be sent to the government, what is his qualification and what is his personality. According to the English newspaper Hindustan Times, the Supreme Court Collegium on Sunday interacted with the people nominated for the post of judges in Allahabad, Rajasthan and Bombay High Courts and tested their qualifications and personality.

Till now, information about the judicial officer or lawyer who was nominated for the post of judge, his qualification, knowledge about law and how long he has been associated with judicial matters, used to come to the Supreme Court Collegium through a file from the concerned High Court. . On the basis of the information recorded on this file, merits were determined and then the name of the judicial officer or lawyer nominated for the Supreme Court or High Court judge was sent to the government. After becoming the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sanjeev Khanna has changed this tradition. This will bring more transparency regarding the judges appointed in the Supreme Court and High Court.

Many times there are allegations that through the collegium system, judges appoint people they know as judges of the Supreme Court or High Court. Due to similar allegations, the Modi government had also brought a law related to the appointment of judges in its first term, but the Supreme Court had rejected it. Even after this, the demand continued to be raised that the Supreme Court Collegium should make changes in the appointment of judges. Now Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna has taken an important step in the same direction. The Supreme Court Collegium will now send the name of the person nominated for judgeship to the government only after a face-to-face meeting with the concerned judicial officer or lawyer. After which the government will work to find out about the nominee from IB and other agencies and when everything goes well, appointment will be made to the post of judge.
