New Delhi: The Supreme Court has got three new judges. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, the government has appointed Justice NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi and AS Chandurkar as judges of the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court collegium recommended
According to the information, the Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended the appointment of Chief Justice NV Anjaria of Karnataka High Court, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court and Justice AS Chandurkar of Bombay High Court as judges of the Supreme Court.
Arjun Ram Meghwal said that after consulting the Chief Justice of India using the powers provided by the Constitution, President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice NV Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice AS Chandurkar as judges of the Supreme Court. After the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Rishikesh Roy, his names were recommended for three existing vacancies of judges in the apex court.
Who is Justice NV Anjaria
Justice NV Anjaria started practicing in the Gujarat High Court under Senior Advocate SN Shelat in August 1988. He handled constitutional, civil, labor and service matters and served as a permanent lawyer for various state bodies. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011 and became a permanent judge on 6 September 2013. He was sworn in as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on 25 February 2024.
Who is Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Justice Vijay Bishnoi was nominated as an advocate on 8 July 1989. He handled many cases including civil, criminal, constitutional, service and election affairs in the Central Administrative Tribunal in Rajasthan High Court and Jodhpur. He served as a permanent lawyer of the central government (2000-2004) and represented various departments of the Government of Rajasthan.
Justice Bishnoi was appointed Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 8 January 2013 and became a permanent judge on 7 January 2015. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court and was sworn in on 5 February 2024.
Who is Justice Atul S Chandurkar Chandurkar
Justice Atul S Chandurkar Chandurkar enrolled as a lawyer on July 21, 1988 and started his legal career in the Chamber of Senior Advocate BN Naik in Mumbai. In 1992, he transferred his practice to Nagpur, where he appeared in various courts and advocated a variety of legal matters. He was appointed Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21 June 2013.
