New Delhi. The Supreme Court has given a big blow to the Gujarat government in the case related to the release of the convicts of Bilkis Bano gang rape and murder case. On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected the review petition of the Gujarat government, in which a review of the order of release of the convicts was demanded.
What did the Supreme Court say?
A bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjwal Bhuyan also rejected the application to list the review petition in open court. The bench said, “We have carefully gone through the review petitions, the challenged order and the documents attached with it.” The court clearly stated that there is no such fact in the petition that warrants reconsideration of the order.

There is no basis for error in the review petition
The Supreme Court further said that after examining all the documents, it is clear that there is no error on record that deserves review. According to the court, nothing was presented in the review petition of the Gujarat government, which could form the basis for reconsideration of the order. Therefore, the court dismissed the petition.
Arguments of Gujarat Government
The Gujarat government had argued in its petition that it was unfair to say in the Supreme Court’s 8 January decision that the state government acted in collusion with the culprits. The government said that such a comment is not based on facts and is inappropriate in terms of judicial process. However, the Supreme Court rejected this argument of the government.
What is the whole matter?
The Bilkis Bano case is related to the 2002 Gujarat riots, in which Bilkis Bano was gang-raped and several members of her family were brutally murdered. The convicts were first sentenced to life imprisonment, but were released prematurely last year, after which the decision was widely criticized and a review was sought in the Supreme Court.
