The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the CBI’s petition challenging the Bombay High Court order to suspend the life sentence of Chhota Rajan and grant him bail in the Supreme Court 2021.
A bench of Justice Vikramnath, Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to Rajan and sought his reply within four weeks.
The bench said, “Issue notice, which should be replied within four weeks. Meanwhile, the petitioner’s counsel will also remove the flaws mentioned by the registry.
In May last year, a special court convicted Rajan for the murder of Shetty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Rajan then filed an appeal in the High Court against the sentence. In its order passed on 23 October 2024, the High Court suspended his sentence and granted bail. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has challenged the High Court order.
Shetty, owner of the Golden Crown Hotel in Gamdevi, Central Mumbai, was shot dead by two members of the Rajan gang on the first floor of the hotel on 4 May 2001.
The investigation revealed that Shetty had received a call from Chhota Rajan gang member Hemant Pujari forcibly recovery and was murdered for not giving money.
Crime Reporter J. Rajan, already serving a sentence of life imprisonment in the case of Dey’s murder, is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
