New Delhi. The bail plea of Tahir Hussain, the main accused in the 2020 Delhi riots and former Aam Aadmi Party councilor, was heard in the Supreme Court on Monday. The court postponed the hearing till Tuesday on the request of Tahir’s lawyer. Tahir Hussain has been fielded by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) from Mustafabad Assembly seat of Delhi. He wants to come out of jail for election campaign. Senior lawyer Siddharth Aggarwal, appearing in the court, cited the acceptance of nomination by the Election Commission and demanded permission for Tahir to campaign.
‘Such people should be banned from contesting elections’
During the hearing of the petition in the bench of Supreme Court Justice Pankaj Mithal and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Justice Mithal, referring to the serious allegations, said, “All such people should be banned from contesting elections.” On this, Tahir’s lawyer argued that the case is suitable for granting bail. On the request of the senior lawyer, the bench decided to hear the case on Tuesday.
Main accused of 2020 Delhi riots
Tahir Hussain is one of the main accused in the 2020 riots in north-east Delhi, in which more than 50 people lost their lives. Tahir is accused of playing an important role in the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma. Delhi High Court had given him custodial parole to file nomination for the assembly elections. However, his plea for interim bail for election campaign was rejected.

AIMIM gave ticket
AIMIM has given ticket to Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad assembly seat. Earlier Tahir was associated with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but now he is contesting elections on AIMIM ticket. His nomination has sparked debate in political circles, as he faces serious allegations of riots and murder of Ankit Sharma.
