Air India flight AI315, which left Hong Kong for Delhi, had to return to Hong Kong late Sunday night due to suspected technical fault. The incident occurred when more than 200 passengers and crew members were riding in the aircraft. The incident has once again questioned aviation security and technical preparations for Air India.
According to Hindustan Times reports, flight AI315 flew from Hong Kong International Airport on Sunday, 15 June 2025 at 10:36 pm (local time). This Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft was scheduled for Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. A few hours after the flying, the pilot detected suspected technical faults in the aircraft and decided to return the aircraft back to Hong Kong, giving priority to security. The aircraft landed safely at Hong Kong Airport at 3:45 am (local time).
Air India said in its statement that the decision was taken “precaution”, and technical fault is being investigated. However, the exact cause of malfunction is not yet clear. All passengers and crew were taken safely, and passengers were held in the hotel. At 10:35 am on Monday morning, an alternative aircraft left for Delhi to Delhi, which reached Delhi at 1:40 pm (IST).
This incident created inconvenience and concern among the passengers. Many passengers on social media expressed disappointment over delay and lack of communication. A passenger said, “Stayed in Hong Kong overnight, and no clear information was found in the beginning.” However, the calm and professional attitude of the crew was also appreciated.
Air India apologized to the passengers for inconvenience and said that their priority is the safety of the passengers. The aircraft has been grounded for technical examination, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed. This incident is the second technical problem of Air India in recent months, which has questioned its maintenance protocol.
