The special thing about the decision of the Congress government of Telangana to conduct a caste survey is that just two days ago there were reports in the media that the Modi government at the Center is going to conduct the census from 2025. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised the issue of caste for a long time. He along with other opposition leaders is demanding the central government to conduct caste census. In every census conducted till now, information about Scheduled Castes, Tribes and OBCs has been collected. The demand of Congress and opposition parties is that the census should find out the population of each caste and accordingly they should be given a share in government schemes.
Let us tell you that earlier, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar had released the data after conducting a caste survey. After this, Nitish Kumar had also passed a bill in the Bihar Assembly to increase the reservation according to the data of this caste survey, but first the Patna High Court and then the Supreme Court put a stay on the efforts of the Nitish Kumar government to increase the reservation. In fact, the Supreme Court had said in an important decision that reservation cannot be more than 50 percent. If more than 50 percent reservation is to be given, the government will have to amend the Constitution.
