The campaign to take out eight people trapped in a partially demolished tunnel of Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) in Telangana continued on the 16th day and meanwhile it has been decided to carry the dead dogs searching dogs in the tunnel.
On March 7, dogs were taken inside the tunnel, involveing the dogs in the rescue work.
A police official said that specially trained dogs will be taken into a tunnel on Sunday to find out human remains.
According to a senior official, rescue teams will dig up to two points marked by human residue dogs (HRDD) and will be stuck in the second layer of tunnel tunnel boring machines (TBM).
Dogs of the Belgian Melinois breed of Kerala Police are capable of identifying the smell of 15 feet depth.
The Telangana government has decided to deploy robots for rescue operations from March 11 to ensure safety of rescue personnel. Challenging situations including water and mud inside the tunnel pose considerable risk.
The official said that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has submitted a preliminary report in which it has warned that the rescue operation at the last 70 meters (at the accident site) should be conducted with extreme caution.
Since pieces of huge TBM have been mixed in water, soil and stones inside the tunnel, they have become a threat to the rescue team.
The rescue operation is being conducted amid challenging circumstances including mud and water leakage.
Eight people including engineers and laborers have been stranded in the SLBC project tunnel since 22 February. Experts of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Navy and other agencies are constantly making efforts to evacuate them safely.
